Earth, fire and magic potion
The Tamegroute workshops have remained almost unchanged since their construction in the mid-17th century. Therefore, they are considered among the oldest in Morocco still in activity. The clay is worked according to exclusive processes, passed down from generation to generation.
The clay is kneaded by hand and then spread out under the stars to ferment. Next, the craftsman works it, using a pottery wheel with a pedal. Once molded, the ceramic is dried in the sun. A few days later, each piece is covered with a natural glaze made from khôl, copper powder, barley flour and local dry stones. It is an ingenious alloy of manganese, silica, cobalt and copper oxide, with barley starch as a binder!
The pottery is steam-fired in traditional dome-shaped kilns, heated to over 1,000°, using a mixture of palm fronds, dried thorns, and wood chips. This step is what gives the ceramic its unique colors, reminiscent of both green palm groves and the majestic desert.
At the end of a long and almost meditative process, the colorful pottery shines in the sun, symbolizing a precious heritage of the Draa region.
