The ektara, (also called ek tara, iktar or gopichand) is a very simple stringed instrument used in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Its very name, ek tara, literally means "a single rope". This rope is stretched along a branching bamboo pole attached to a dry gourd, which acts as a sounding board, covered with a kind of patch of animal skin.
