Description

Thetable(also called table) is a membranophone percussion instrument composed of two units. In Hindustani classical music it is not only used as a rhythmic accompaniment, but also as a solo instrument.

It is also used in the traditional music of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The term table/strong> refers both to the pair of drums (used in some variants of Indian music) and to the melodic drum alone.

Technique of use:

The drum played with the dominant hand is made of wood and is tuned to a specific note, thus contributing or complementing the melody. The tuning range is limited, although there are dayansof different sizes, each with its own tone.

To get into harmony with the soloist, it will usually be necessary to tune the dayanwith the tonic, dominant, or subdominant of the soloist's key.

The other tabla drum is larger and made of metal (or sometimes clay, though that's rarer). It has a deeper and sustained bass tone. In addition to normal fingertip strikes, the wrist is used to apply pressure, or to slide it over the head to achieve a glissando. This technique achieves an unusual and highly characteristic effect of the instrument.

LThe blows with which the instrument is made to sound are calledbowl, and have sila namesbas. Each one of thesebowlthey can be of the right hand, of the left or of both hands at the same time. The names of thebowlare generally known by their phonetic transcription (eg. dhainstead of धा,tininstead of तिं) due to easier remembering (for Westerners) and easier transmission by mechanical and electronic means.

Iscoughbowlare grouped into rhythms, ortheka(pronouncedtjeka), which, transcribed or said, are a series of syllables/words in a row that represent the strokes of which they are composed. It is very common for tabla players to recite aloud the thekasthat they are going to play just before they do it. Below you can see how it sounds!
