Taracea is a craft technique applied to the coating of pavements, walls, furniture, sculptures and artistic objects. In the work pieces cut of different materials are used (stones, marble, wood, metals ...), that are fitting into a support until the decorative design. It is a work of embedding. Between some pieces and others there is a contrast effect that depends on the color and the characteristic of the material used.

In the inlay, the base bed can not be seen between one piece and another embedded, as is the case with the mosaic. The material that is going to be embedded with the shape of the design is cut, placed on the surface or support and the outline is drawn. Once the dibow in the support, it empties slightly, leaving a hole where the inlay will be embedded; Then smooth and level the set so that the surface is clear.

There is news of inlay work from the Sumerian period in Mesopotamia (3000 BC) and the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in China. It spread through Asia Minor (now Turkey) and later the Romans adopted it when they came into contact with the Hellenistic world. They called this art incrustatio or loricatito. Pliny the Elder makes an extensive description of this technique in his work Naturalis historia. The pieces with which the incrustations were made, called crustae. The Arabs introduced this technique in Spain, that's why inlay comes from the Arabic word Tar'sia, which means encrustation.

At present, this technique lasts in Damascus and Granada .
